This hilltop lodge 3km above town boasts Stowe's most dramatic setting. The Austrian-style chalet, built by Maria von Trapp of Sound of Music fame (note the family photos lining the walls), houses 96 traditional lodge rooms, many newly renovated and most with balconies affording lovely mountain vistas. Alternatively, rent one of the cozy villas or guesthouses scattered across the property.
The 2700-acre spread offers stupendous hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, while the family's Kaffehaus and Bierhall, both located nearby, add another delightful dose of Austria-in-Vermont flavor.
