Fort Holmes

Michigan

British forces built the small wood and earth fort in 1814 to protect against a US attack during the War of 1812. This is a replica, as the original structure fell into ruin eons ago. It doesn't take long to poke around. Better than the fort itself is the view. The site sits on the island's highest point and unfurls awesome views out over the Straits of Mackinac.
