Ponce

To the east of Plaza Las Delicias, this independent historical hotel isn't much to look at from the outside, but inside, you'll find a grand lobby. The grandeur fails to continue into the 80-odd rooms, which are slightly tired, cheap-feeling and often pounding to the beat of whatever function is on.

Continental breakfast is served on a sunny rooftop deck near the beautifully renovated pool, which is one bonus. Check out the pictures on the wall for a look at Ponce in its prime and imagine how good standards might once have been.
