Museum of the Black Ship

Izu Peninsula

This small museum displays artefacts and artwork relating to the reception of Commodore Matthew Perry and his gunboats, dubbed 'Black Ships' by locals both for their paint job and the smoke belching from their coal-powered steam engines. English captions are lacking, however.

If you're interesting in learning more about Perry and the arrival of the Americans, the Archives of History in Yokohama are your best bet.
