On the southeast coast, Poliohni is considered the first prehistoric settlement in the Aegean and – allegedly – the first example of constituted democracy in the whole of Europe. It has the remains of four ancient settlements, the most significant being a pre-Mycenaean city that predated Troy VI (1800–1275 BC). The site, with its tiny museum, is fascinating, but remains are few.
