Sleeping Buddha Temple

Beijing

Established in the Tang dynasty but rebuilt many times in successive eras, this temple within the Beijing Botanical Gardens is home to a 54-tonne bronze statue of Sakyamuni, said to be cast in 1321 during the Mongol Yuan dynasty. Though described as 'sleeping', reclining Buddha statues depict the deity on the cusp of death and entry into nirvana.
