The Avila Beach Hotel comprises the magnificently restored 18th-century home of a Dutch governor along with a couple of modern wings of luxurious accommodations and a charming adults-only tower with stunning sea views. The elegant grounds include two private beaches and a gorgeous infinity pool, along with an underwater coral nursery that's part of a restoration project.

There's an on-site restaurant and a boat-shaped beach bar, and the popular Blues Bar at the end of a hotel pier has a popular jazz night on Thursday. The Octagon Museum is at the northern end of the property, as well as a plaza where events are held, and an old Rolls Royce that can be rented for city tours.

It's a short walk to Pietermaai, or you can catch the free shuttle bus to the city center.
